Weekend Plans

Normally this time of year in Washington, D.C. it is cold and gloomy outside. A typical weekend in January would include a lot of time spent indoors, watching movies, cooking, and meeting up with friends at restaurants. Northern California has a different idea for January. The weather is comfortable with warm, sunny afternoons. Having such beautiful weather year round gives you more options for your weekend.

This weekend, we are going hiking and wine tasting in Healdsburg with some new friends and catching my 49ers playoff game. I also plan to sleep in and get one serious, kick-my-booty workout in.

If you have an open weekend, here are my three recommendations:

1. Catch an Oscar-nominated movie. Now that the Golden Globes are over and the Oscar nominees were announced, run to the theater and see “American Hustle,” “Philomena,” “Nebraska,” or “August: Osage County.” I loved “American Hustle.” The movie was extremely entertaining (the costumes, the hair!) and close pay attention because there is a twist, you will never see coming.

2. Give yourself a mini pampering or makeover. Yes, I went to a spa last weekend and enjoyed every minute of my time there, but you can relax at home with spa products, candles, and zen music. Pour a lovely bath of lavender epsom salts, put a face mask on, use a lip scrub, light a candle, and relax for 25 minutes. As for facial products, I have very sensitive combination skin, but love Origins Clear Improvement Charcoal Mask  and St Ives. Fresh Skin Apricot Scrub Exfoliant. For your lips, I found the most amazing sugar scrub, it is so soft and delicate, but very effective. Try Bliss Fabulips Sugar Lip Scrub, for a more kissable pout. Just call yourself sugarlips. This is honestly my favorite product right now.

3. Brunch it up. Yes, brunch is such a weekend routine kind of thing, but maybe try a new place like a jazz brunch. If you are lucky to be in Northern California, there is a scenic vineyard called Mountain Winery that serves delicious French Toast with jazz. They have outdoor seating, but sit in the main dining room if you are going for the music. Mountain Winery has brunch events a few weekends a month. If brunch is too early for you, try BIX jazz bar for dinner in San Francisco.
